These very detailed ecosystems showcase one of the great advantages of natural science illustration over photography -- communities of plants and animals compressed into a small amount of space.  Some of the ecosystems represented here are:  the Desert, Wetlands, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring and Prairie.  I used gouache as the medium for these paintings.
