Sue Coultas -- "I had never used gouache before so I was a bit apprehensive.  I rarely work using paintbrushes or wet medium since I am mainly a pastel artist.  Turns out I had nothing to worry about.  Sandy is such an easy going teacher and took her time explaining the process to everyone.  She had printed workbooks for us that led us, step-by-step, through the whole process.  I would definitely recommend these workbooks because they describe, in simple terms, how to paint detailed illustrations."

Gouache, pronounced gwash, is an AMAZING medium.  Most of the works in this web site have been painted with gouache and you can see that you can achieve very realistic, detailed images.  Gouache  has many advantages:  it doesn't have the slow drying time and odor of oil;  it can be reworked months or even years later, unlike acrylics;  and its much easier to control than transparent watercolor.

I can help you learn the techniques of using gouache to create realistic natural science illustrations.  My courses are easy to follow, step by step demonstrations that make it simple to learn layering and blending, two of the techniques that are essential in creating a good illustration.

So, if your goal is to create highly detailed illustrations then these workbooks can be a tool to help you achieve that goal.  They can be a stepping stone to help you on your way to create your own paintings.  The downloads are pdf's of approximately 40 - 60 pages.  The printed workbooks are exactly the same material.  Both are available through this web site and, additionally, the printed workbooks are available through Amazon.

The cost for each printed workbook is $12.95 with an additional $3.00 shipping and handling.  The immediate downloads cost $7.95 each.
